I approach writing with a rigorous closeness. Not merely a kind of scrutiny, but a way of recognizing the autonomy of a piece beyond its relationship to the author and their own habits and predispositions. In a sense, stripping it down to only what is real and true and essential. I also work from the philosophy that a writer should never have to explicitly or implicitly explain their work or explain in their work–if the writing succeeds, it will do so for its own reasons and the text should stand on its own without an extra line or word or syllable.

In my role as editor or mentor, I am a strong advocate for creative freedom. I do not subscribe to the idea that there is a rigid model for what “good” writing is, but rather, I want to encourage experimentation and the exploration of your own creative impulses while also providing guidance toward honing your skill set to best understand and express your intention.

Together, my role will extend beyond providing feedback on your writing, but function as a collaborative effort to develop your work and your abilities as a writer. If you are ultimately seeking to publish your work I can also provide guidance, tools, and resources to help you navigate the often complicated and laborious publishing industry. Whether you are simply looking for a line edit on a poem, workshopping to spark new ideas for a project, or a full manuscript review with publishing guidance, I will treat your writing with the same rigor and attention to detail.

OFFERING:
  • Line edits
  • General critiques, including feedback and planning
  • Full manuscript editing and revision
  • Publishing guidance
  • Concept development
  • Manuscript interior layouts and cover design for self-publishing
  • Full collaborative mentorship from where you are to where you want to be

Intuitive and Holistic Critiques and Edits

As an intuitive writer my creative process is guided by instinct, allowing me to craft stories and poems that resonate emotionally, while my extensive knowledge of literary techniques and traditions ensures that my work is polished, structurally sound, and meaningful.

I approach critiques and edits for creative writing and poetry with the same deep, nuanced care and blend of empathy and expertise. It is an intuitive process that allows me to grasp the emotional core and underlying themes of a piece, providing insightful feedback that enhances the writer’s vision rather than imposing rigid rules. Part of this process is somatic in nature and deeply connected to the physical and sensory experience of language, emphasizing the connection between mind, body, and poetic expression.

Working together, I will focus on what my intuition notices, the questions that arise, and how to best use that experience as a guide for bringing your creative project to its next stage of development.

OFFERING:
  • Intuitive critiques with line edits and suggestions
  • Personalized writing prompts
  • Listening critiques
  • Concept development and workshopping

Ginger and Andrew have created something that’s been exactly what I’ve needed. A class outside of an institution. A clear structure while also being flexible and open. And a group of people I know I can turn to at any time with creative work. They put so much care into making a place that nurtures all of our creative lives, and it’s always a comfort to be able to look forward to the next iteration.

Evan Burgess

The Earth Of is interdisciplinary, non-institutional, literate, and humane. Is it a workshop or a seminar, a course or a community? It’s all of those and something else. The Earth Of keeps evolving. It’s rigorously grounded and radically open. It’s historically aware, socially inquisitive, queer, gentle, well connected, and ready to be your new friend.

Christine Lorenz

The two years (and two publications) I spent with The Earth Of were a place of community, of processing the chaos and growth of our times, and of play and experimentation. I can't thank Ginger and Andrew enough. What they created was medicinal on many layers.

Monica Lacey

The Earth Of is a collaborative, supportive, and expansive community where you are encouraged to test the edges of thought and creativity. The workshop material is well planned to support discussion and the participants work. Always a delight to engage in this space.

Life itself can be understood as the search for our stories, as the enactment of our stories, as the endless hope of evidence that we exist, and the craft of finding ourselves in the nuance of our individual voice within our shared stories. It is in this deep structural sense that I celebrate our Arts Letters and Numbers writing workshops directed by Ginger Teppner and Andrew Helton. These workshops create a space for a remarkable gathering of writers to explore their voices, to expand the individual poetic imagination and make space for our shared stories. Together they build us, and our earth of, out of words and dreams. I am profoundly grateful to Ginger and Andrew for creating the atmospheres within which everyone discovers such depth and voice and vision and create gifts to us all and to the earth itself.

David Gersten

I never would have imagined that the conversations between us would become as deep as they did, that a book would be inspired by the process, and that my poems would be midwifed by so many helpful fellow creatives.
