Past Programs

In this 4 week workshop you will be assigned an object to write through/from/into. This will not be an exercise in writing or creating the story of an object, but rather, how an experience or relationship with an object informs your world and the direction of your creativity. Whether it’s the act of communion in Christianity, transcendence in philosophy, Samskara in Hinduism, the Tsukumogami of Japan, or the universal experience of nostalgia, objects are deeply important to the ways in which we all experience and share life.

Imagine what it means for an object to be seen. Does its existence make certain that humans become, or does human existence guarantee that it appears? Can you resist denying or affirming its reality? Validating its perspective? What happens to our relationship with ourselves when objects are forfeited? In times when material possessions pose existential threats how do we maintain our confidence in the unstable structures we call things?
